Bluff’s junior kata world champ regales in KSI success
Despite the nerves, Shepherd always knew he had a chance of winning
YEARS of self-motivation and pushing himself to be the best has resulted in a 12-year-old Brighton Beach Primary pupil becoming the boys junior kata (sparring) world champion at the Kimura Shukokai International (KSI) world tournament.
The tournament, which took place in Sweden from 19 to 21 July, was a nerve-wracking but rewarding adventure for young Nathan Shepherd who has been practicing karate since the age of four at the Academy of Martial Arts Subarashii dojo.

Despite the nerves, Shepherd always knew he had a chance of winning as he has always given it his all. “The moment I got up to fight, my nerves disappeared and I became the strong fighter I know I am. I climbed the ranks and finally faced off in the final. I knew I had a 50-50 chance, so I had to give it everything I had. To my shock, I won. Out of 21 countries I took that top spot and I became the one to beat,” he said smiling.

He owes his win to the many years of discipline and hours of training he has dedicated towards the sport. “Nothing comes to you if you don’t work hard for it. Karate has taught me great patience and the importance of fitness and through more hard work and passion, I hope to one day become a sensei and impart my knowledge to the next generation,” he said.
