Bluff nature reserve set to expand after land donation
The donation was spearheaded by the Environmental Planning and Climate Protection Department
THE Bluff is one step closer to creating a combined Treasure Beach and Bluff nature reserve, following the donation of multiple parcels of land which were made by the provincial Human Settlements Department on Thursday, 27 September.
The parcels of land are located along the natural belt which connects the green space adjacent to Dirkie Uys Primary School up to the coastal grasslands in Treasure Beach.
“The donation was spearheaded by the Environmental Planning and Climate Protection Department (EPCPD). The department has commenced with the rezoning of the area to secure greater protection for this environmentally sensitive area on the Bluff,” said ward 66 councillor JP Prinsloo.

By proclaiming this area as a nature reserve, it creates an opportunity for much-needed jobs within the community, especially through the eco-tourism sector. The plans fall within the strategic objectives set out by the ward 66 committee, local community tourism organisation SODURBA and conservation organisations such as the Wildlife and Environment Society South Africa (WESSA) which has a Treasure Beach office.
“We will continue to work closely with all stakeholders under the umbrella of our newly formed conservancy to ensure the South Durban Basin as a whole will reap the benefits,” he said.
