Bluff’s independent ‘Tannie Jorrie’ celebrates her century

She has become a prominent figure in the community, which was evident at a huge service held in her honour at the church

GARDENING and hard work might be the secret to a long life, if one follows the example of Bluff centenarian ‘Tannie Jorrie’ Maria Magdelena Olivier, who celebrated her 100th birthday on Thursday, 11 October.
Born in Albertinia in the Western Cape into a family of eight, Tannie Jorrie owes her long life to her active and healthy lifestyle and the belief that laziness is not an option.

“I was married for 28 years and had two children. I always kept myself busy being a housewife and a mother. Like my garden, I grew my family to be wonderful and well-rounded people,” said Tannie Jorrie.

She married a handsome naval officer named Jannie Olivier when she was 28-years-old and moved to the Bluff about 40 years ago. Tannie Jorrie has always been a church-goer, and has been with the NG Kerk Durban-Oos for many years since her arrival. “Religion is important, you have to have some belief, some faith to keep you going, especially through the tough times. I advise the community to read their Bibles every day and spend some time on your knees,” said Maria.

She has become a prominent figure in the community, which was evident at a huge service held in her honour at the church on Sunday, 14 October. Her birthday celebrations stretched throughout the weekend, starting with a beach view breakfast and a massive family braai on Saturday. With all the love and wishes she received from family and friends, Tannie Jorrie couldn’t wait to be in her garden again, tending to her plants.
Gardening has always been her hobby and prides herself in living independently. Not having a domestic worker, she keeps her own home spic and span.

“I don’t believe in laziness, I also believe that independence is important and to always have a hobby to keep your mind and body busy.

She makes sure she eats healthily and every meal includes vegetables. “It’s all about eating good portions and fresh vegetables,” she said smiling.
