Shaila’s got some soccer skills

She has impressed soccer coaches with her skills and her supportive teammates have said that they love playing with her because she helps them win.

YELLOWWOOD Park Primary School (YPPS) grade 3 learner, Shaila Seeram, is already breaking boundaries as the only girl in the school’s junior soccer team.

She has impressed soccer coaches with her skills and her supportive teammates have said that they love playing with her because she helps them win. Shaila said that the love for soccer runs in her family. “My granny, mom and my dad know and love soccer and my grandpa used to be a soccer player too back in the day. I have enjoyed playing for the YPPS junior soccer team, regardless that I am the only girl on the team. We all play well together as a team. I have a lot of famous soccer players that I look up to and if I had to choose one team that I would really want to play for, it would be Tottenham Hotspur Football Club,” she said.

“I first discovered Shaila’s talent earlier this year during the weekly physical education (PE) lessons that the juniors have. She chose to do soccer as her main PE activity and that is when I saw that she could dribble and receive passes very well. I approached her and encouraged her to join the boys junior soccer team, as there isn’t a girls team available for juniors at the school. She plays the striker position and has contributed a lot to the team and even scores goals at some of our friendly matches. We’re working towards developing her skills more because she has great potential. I’m very proud of Shaila and I hope to see her carry on to senior level in this sport,” said YPPS soccer coach Nosipho Majola.
YPPS principal, Bongani Khanyi, said that Shaila has encouraged the school to think on more broader spectrum and afford young girls opportunities in sport at a young age, so that they will be prepared to compete in the big leagues in the future.
