Three Wentworth bowlers compete in Port Natal junior master’s champs

On Thursday morning, 29 August, the monthly Wentworth breakfast trips will be played after the competitors have enjoyed their breakfast prepared by Fred’s Kitchen.

All eyes of Wentworth Bowling Club members will be on the Port Natal Bowls junior master’s singles championship being contested at Westville Bowling Club this weekend.

WBC is very proud to have three of their young bowlers selected as part of the 12 bowlers competing in this competition. Troy Garland, Trystan and Kearan Lassak have proved that hard work and perseverance reap rewards and will apply a good psychological approach to their singles games this weekend in an attempt to continually excel under pressure. Best bowling wishes are extended to all three Wentworth bowlers.

Last week’s promotion and development bowls saw Johnny ‘Mooiman’ du Plessis team up with two rapidly improving newbies, Marc Linkerman and Gerard Davies, to claim the top spot on the day. There will be no official development bowls on Wednesday afternoon, 28 August, but bowlers are welcome to arrange their own tabs in games.

Friday’s Tomasina’s men’s casual bowls saw Arnie Harper return to the Wentworth greens after a long break and, playing with Robbie Carr and Albert van Niekerk, take home the first prize after the morning’s play.Graham Bransby, Phil Hill and Ron ‘bias’ Addinal were seven shots behind the leaders in second spot. The sportsmen’s prize went to Dudley Dorrofield, Helmut Brutti and Rajen Pillay.

On Sunday, 25 August, the Grand Rapid Spur Big Jim pairs proved to be a successful morning for the father and son combination of Ian and Wesley Hayes who won both their games to claim the top sponsored prize.

The women’s team comprising Anne Bonthrone and Honey Kitchenbrand also had a triumphant morning, winning both their games and beating some of the top boys to finished second.

The second session went to Matt Lassak and Godfrey Addinal who won their second game with a commendable +19.

Three club competition finals were played this week. In a closely contested nominated pairs final Jay Retief and Cheryl Waterman took the game from Maree Sadie and Jenny Greef to gain championship status. Maree was on the mat again when she teamed up with Eileen du Plessis and Belinda Lassak to contest the nominated trips final against Sharon de Kock, Jo Jo Jordaan and Margaret Walters. Sharon and her team took an early lead in the game and maintained this to take the title for 2019.

On Sunday afternoon the men’s veteran singles final was contested between Brian Smith and Neville Dolley. Both bowlers demonstrated the mastery that typifies competitive bowls and had spectators on the edge of their seats as they went head to head in what must be the most exciting game played this season. With the men on twenty shots each, the last end could have gone either way with 21 shots being required to win the game. It was Neville who, with his last bowl, drew the winning shot to claim the championship.

This week the club will be abuzz with activity, with Wednesday morning seeing the bowlers who compete in the Grand Rapid Spur monthly pairs completion take to the green.

On Thursday morning, 29 August, the monthly Wentworth breakfast trips will be played after the competitors have enjoyed their breakfast prepared by Fred’s Kitchen. On Friday, 30 August, the club hosts the weekly Tomasina’s men’s casual bowls. All games start at 9am.

On Saturday afternoon, 31 August, Godfrey Addinal and Brendon Davies will take to the green in the Doug Mitchell singles semi-final to decide who will meet Kearan Lassak in the final.

The community is invited to enjoy a bingo evening on Friday, starting at 5.30pm. This is a fundraiser for Troy Garland and his Port Natal under 30 team who travel to Gauteng in September. Lots of prizes are up for grabs and the usual bar facilities and Fred’s menu is available for those who attend.
