WBC’s Kearan scoops runner up title in PN U30 district tourney
The curtain has fallen on the Port Natal U30 junior master tournament and members of Wentworth Bowling Club could not be prouder.
The club’s three young bowlers, Troy Garland, Trystan Lassak and Kearan Lassak acquitted themselves well in a competition that saw some of the best bowls played in a district tournament. Any club member who officiated or supported the boys left Westville Bowling Club with sense of pride and respect for 13-year-old Kearan, who played with a sense of purpose and determination throughout the tournament. His strategic play, using exceptional drawing skills and when required, applying his driving ability with deadly precision, resulted in Kearan emerging from the five preliminary rounds unbeaten, the only bowler in the tournament to achieve this.
Facing an older, more experienced bowler in the final, Kearan had spectators amazed and commenting in admiration of his cool, calm and collected approach to the game, as the lead changed hands a number of times during the 24-end game. At the end it was his opposition who reached the goal of 21 shots to take the championship, leaving Kearan a worthy runner-up. The club looks forward to the future achievements of all their youngsters as they continue to gain recognition and bring accolade to Wentworth BC.
A second tribute goes out to the club’s 2019 women’s novice singles champion. Ruth Petzer who completed the round robin competition unscathed and claimed the right to have her name recorded in gold on the club honours board.
Godfrey Addinal won the second semi-final of the men’s Doug Mitchell singles, and will face Kearan Lassak to determine the winner of this title.
Wednesday morning, 28 August, saw the playing of the Grand Rapid Spur any pairs competition. With a 4+33, Derek Stevens and Frank Gielink claimed top spot in front of Brian Smith and Herbie Roux. Second session went to Margaret Walters and Mike Schudel.
Thursday morning’s Wentworth breakfast trips proved successful for Dawn and Kurt Spack, who teamed up with Jo Jo Jordaan to collect the day’s honours, leaving Norman Moore, Dave Matthews and Claude Newman in second. Anne Bonthrone, Honey Kitchenbrand and Margaret Walters lay claim to the second session prize.
The top podium position in the Tomasina’s men’s casual bowls played on Friday morning, 30 August, was claimed by Graham Bransby, Helmut Brutti and Shane Roelefse. Gerald Royle and Robbie Carr did enough to claim the second spot. The sportsmen’s prize went to Godfrey Addinal and Ivor Aylward.
The club’s competition secretaries are busy posting to complete the quota for 2019 and members are asked to check the boards regularly to ensure they fulfill their commitments.
