ONE of the Bluff Bowling Club’s oldest members, 84-year-old Dudley Dorrofield, opened the nominated men’s fours tournament hosted at the club, last weekend.
The Bluff resident was honoured to roll the first ball at the two-day tournament, held on March 5 and 6.
An avid all-round sportsman, Dorrofield, said he found himself passionate about many sports, but played cricket, soccer and tennis for as long as his body allowed him to.
Still able to actively engage in bowls, Dorrofield said he is glad that the sport offers those in their golden years the opportunity to be active outdoors.

“I was actively involved in tennis and one of my friends suggested that I come along with them to play bowls. I laughed and said no, that is for old people. I didn’t pursue the sport at the time, but my friend convinced me to try. I did not realise it would be both fun and competitive,” he said.

Dorrofield excelled in the sport and went on to play in the finals of the South African Championships in 1998. His name is placed on the club’s honours board 53 times and he has also served as the president of the club over his 47 year tenure as a member.

“Bowling is competitive and allows enough physical activity for older people. I want youngsters to break stereotypes and join the club as bowling is for people of all ages and is a fun and interactive sport to engage in at any age,” he added.
