Wentworth police spokesperson Captain Mbuso Gumede said Tissong was also deemed unfit to possess a firearm.
The accused was arrested in September 2022 during a joint operation between the National Public Order policing unit and the police when they received information of someone in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, suspected to be used in criminal activities.
The officers followed the leads – leading them to the suspect’s house in Wentworth.
“Upon searching the premises, officers found a firearm pistol with a serial number on it and six 9mm live [pieces of] ammunition under the mattress where the suspect had been sleeping. Upon requesting the suspect to produce the licence for the firearm and ammunition, he failed to do so.
“Officers then arrested the suspect and took him to the Wentworth SAPS where he was charged accordingly.
The case docket was assigned to Detective Sergeant Bhekithemba Zulu who started the investigation, and upon searching for the ownership of the firearm, it transpired that it was linked to an armed robbery case that was registered in 2020 at the Ntuzuma SAPS.
In October 2020, Detective Zulu sent the case to court, and bail was opposed. Detective Zulu was praised by the station management for securing the conviction,” said Gumede.
