Pitbull-cross puppy inhumanely tied to a tree and abandoned

The Montclair community is searching for the person who allegedly tied a six-month-old pitbull-cross puppy with an electrical cord to a tree and abandoned it.

A HEART-WRENCHING discovery, accompanied by a compassionate rescue was made in Glen Road, Montclair on January 9, when a Montclair CPF Sub Forum member came across a pitbull-cross puppy tied to a tree with a red electrical cord.

The shocking incident came to light when Donavan Vadiveloo, from the Montclair CPF Sub Forum, noticed the abandoned puppy, believed to be six-months-old, and immediately called for assistance. Mandy Edwards, another CPF patroller, and her husband Shane swiftly responded to help Vadiveloo, who stayed at the scene to ensure the puppy’s safety.

Belinda Harcombe of Montclair Crime Eye group, said the puppy was scared and cold upon arrival.

“The poor puppy snarled and growled out of fear but soon settled when she was covered with a blanket and released from the tree,” said Harcombe.

Visible marks were left on the puppy’s neck from the cord being tied too tightly.

Shane assisted by carefully removing the cable from the puppy. Harcombe said the puppy was then rushed to the Montclair Animal Hospital for urgent care.

“Veterinarians took her in for a check-up and tested her for Parvovirus; thank goodness the results came back negative. She was vaccinated, dewormed, and made comfortable as she started her recovery,” Harcombe said.

The red electrical cord used to tie the puppy to the tree.

The story made its rounds on social media, eventually reaching a woman who offered to take the puppy in as a foster while investigations are ongoing.

“If after seven days the puppy isn’t claimed, the woman will automatically become the puppy’s forever mom. The reason it’s done this way is because we don’t know if this puppy may have been stolen or dumped there, we know nothing about the circumstances and should someone come forward with proof that it is their pup, it must be reunited with its owner,” said Harcombe.

The Durban and Coast SPCA was also called in to probe possible cruelty and abandonment. Inspector Nishal Ramsamy of the SPCA has appealed for witnesses to come forward with information.

Harcombe said grainy CCTV footage shows a white woman, who appears to be in her 30s, with blonde hair, and wearing a blue-and-white blanket-style shirt and baggy blue jeans, walking the puppy shortly before the incident.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact Belinda Harcombe of Montclair Crime Eye on 084 202 0130 or the Durban and Coast SPCA on 031 579 6500.
