FYNNLAND Primary School’s safe mobility team is once again aiming for success after advancing to the national round of the Vision Imagination Action (VIA) Safe Mobility Ambassadors Programme on October 3. The reigning South African champions, who finished second in the international round last year, will proudly represent KZN at the national finals in Pretoria on October 31.

The VIA Safe Mobility Ambassadors Programme, an initiative by TotalEnergies, aims to promote road safety awareness and encourage responsible mobility among young people worldwide.

Megan Burns, Fynnland Primary School’s safe mobility team co-facilitator, said that the 20-strong Grade Seven team worked tirelessly to maintain their impeccable record.

“Throughout the programme, we were involved in a succession of weekly exercises to raise awareness regarding safe mobility. We completed two activities every week, and for the regional finals, we had to deliver a dramatic action, an artistic action, a debate on peer-to-peer road safety campaigns, and two PowerPoint presentations, one on our observable actions and one on our high-impact awareness campaign that can be launched globally,” she said.

Burns added that the school focused on locating and addressing actual street safety issues around their community. “Our focus has been on fostering road safety among learners and parents. With the help of Ward 66 councillor Zoe Solomon, we managed to address some structural issues around school, like the bus shelter being fixed and road markings were touched up and improved,” she said.

The pressure of being reigning South African champions

As defending champions, there is also lots of pressure to perform. Burns explained that the theme for this year, which is “Level Up,” pushed the team to level up even more.

“Winning isn’t the objective, sustainability and improvement is. We had to prove not just what we’ve accomplished, but how we’ve evolved and how we intend to continue to build upon our work as Safe Mobility Ambassadors,” said Burns.

The national finals will require the team to perform their regional showcase as well as show improvement on their high-impact campaign, which is through their TikTok page.

“Our main message as Safe Mobility Ambassadors is simple, we want to create awareness around safe road use, not only at our school but throughout The Bluff. It is so important that learners feel safe and know how to navigate themselves on the road. As ambassadors we truly believe this will go a long way in creating safer roads for all our scholars,” said Burns.
