Monday Miles: Immersed in the art of Van Gogh

For the final trip in London, we will be stepping into the artistic mind of Vincent Van Gogh, as we explore his works and inspirations.

WELCOME back to Monday Miles, where each week we travel through some of the world’s most fascinating destinations, from historic landmarks to cultural gems. We have toured London’s many wonders-from royal halls to historic bridges-but for our final stop in this vibrant city, we are trading architecture and landmarks for pure artistry.

This week, we step beyond the frame and into the swirling, emotive world of one of history’s greatest visionaries, Vincent Van Gogh. We will be exploring the Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience London, where you don’t just look at art, you step inside it.

 A museum without walls

Nestled in the heart of London, this is an exhibition that redefines what it means to visit an art gallery. Swap out the velvet ropes and static paintings, because at the Van Gogh experience you get to see his masterpieces burst to life around you in 360º digital projections and sweeping soundscapes. Every brushstroke, every star, every sunflower moves and breathes, transforming the ordinary paintings into extraordinary stories.

It’s a multi-sensory symphony that bridges the gap between past and present.

What the experience involves:

  • Step Inside the Canvas: Wander into a world where The Starry Night, Sunflowers and Café Terrace at Night swirl to life on towering walls and floors.
  • A virtual reality experience: The experience offers a unique day in the life of the artist in Arles, placing you inside the eight most iconic works by Van Gogh. You get to fly over the golden wheat fields of southern France and peak inside the yellow house that inspired his masterpieces.
  • A Symphony of senses: This experience amalgamates light, motion and music to elicit emotion and depth in each scene.
  • Discover the man behind the masterpieces: You can follow Van Gogh’s life, letters and inspirations through digital displays and storytelling installations, from his struggles with mental health to his deep love for nature and the relentless pursuit of beauty in simplicity.
  • Interactive art studio: Probably my second favourite part of the exhibition, the immersive art studio gives you the chance to colour in your own masterpiece and have it displayed all over just like a Van Gogh work.

The art of connection:

What makes the Van Gogh Immersive Experience truly special is its ability to blur the line separating artist and audience. It’s not about viewing art from a distance but about getting inside the mind of Vincent Van Gogh, seeing the world through his eyes, feeling the passion and pain and poetry which defined his work.

As my last stop in London, this felt like the perfect closing chapter, just being able to see something with so much historical value but in a modern way which perfectly sums up the essence of London.

Where to next?

As we close this London chapter of Monday Miles, we are left inspired by the history, by its creativity and among other things, like what I miss the most, shopping. Next week we set off to another European country, something with a little more “je ne sais quoi”.
