INTRUDERS struck again at Ganges Secondary School in Merebank on October 7, cutting CCTV camera cables before they were disturbed by security guards.

According to sources, the intruders initially cut the CCTV camera cables in an attempt to get access to the school.

While the suspects were trying to make their way onto the school property, a security company was alerted.

Community organisation calls for eThekwini’s Parks department to get involved

Chairperson of the Chinatown and Navy Civic Association, Navin Singh, said residents have made numerous calls to the Parks Department to trim the trees around the school, mainly the fence, as perpetrators use low-lying branches to gain access to the school property.

“The school lost computers, kitchen utensils and copper pipes. After so many emails and calls to senior officials, we still have no help. We are ratepayers and taxpayers just like the people on The Bluff and Morningside. Our water leaks take weeks to be fixed but this municipality increases our tariffs to cover their water loss,” said Singh.

Police spokesperson in Wentworth, Captain Mbuso Gumede, said no case was opened.

The school is still grappling with a significant challenge as rampant cable theft, vandalism and criminal activities continue.

In February 2025, thieves broke into the school premises and removed 16 CCTV cameras worth more than R70 000. The cameras were installed to enhance safety and security at the school.
