Police thwart attempted armed robbery in Merebank

The police were alerted to the incident via radio communication from residents who witnessed the robbery in progress and promptly reported it.

SWIFT response by Wentworth police Crime Prevention unit led to the arrest of a 25-year-old suspect following an attempted armed robbery on Dinapur Road, Merebank, recently.

According to Wentworth police spokesperson, Captain Mbuso Gumede, officers were alerted to the incident via radio communication from residents who witnessed the robbery in progress and promptly reported it.

Upon arriving at the scene, police were informed that the victim, a 25-year-old man, had been walking when he was approached and threatened by an armed suspect.

It is alleged that the victim resisted and fought back, before fleeing into the hardware store where he is employed.

“The suspect then fled the scene, heading towards Warangal Road. Officers were provided with a clear description of the suspect by witnesses at the scene.

“Wentworth SAPS Crime Prevention members immediately pursued the lead and spotted a man matching the description on Warangal Road. The suspect was arrested and found in possession of a black replica gas pistol, which was confiscated at the scene.

“The suspect was taken back to Dinapur Road, where he was positively identified by the victim, who confirmed his intention to open a case of attempted armed robbery with a firearm,” said Gumede.

The suspect was charged and appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on May 29.

“The victim praised the swift and professional response of the police team, particularly the efforts of Constable Graham Mei and the Wentworth Crime Prevention unit, for ensuring the suspect was arrested and brought to justice.

“The Station Commander Colonel Sinayo Mtshali and station management commended the officers for their prompt action and commitment to public safety,” Gumede added.
