eThekwini Municipality’s festive season water plan to aid South Durban

Areas supplied through Wiggins Systems in the south of Durban include:

  • Jacobs
  • Merebank East
  • Merewent,
  • Mobeni
  • Mobeni West
  • Bayhead
  • Fynnlands
  • Austerville
  • Brighton Beach
  • Wentworth
  • Montclair
  • Rossburgh
  • Woodlands
  • Parts of Woodhaven

The municipality has developed a comprehensive readiness plan to meet the increased water demand anticipated during the festive season.

The municipality said this period brings a rise in water usage, placing additional pressure on water systems.

Currently all three bulk water reservoirs at Durban Heights Water Treatment Works are operating at full capacity for the first time in five years.

This has increased the supply assurance to the City. The bulk water reservoirs supply the City through the Northern, Southern Aqueducts and Pinetown system.

The water services directorate presented key measures to Exco which includes:

  • Intensified monitoring of reservoir levels to maintain above 70% capacity in areas expecting high visitor influx.
  • Contingency plans across all regions, with specialised teams to manage disruptions.
  • Risk mitigation measures such as standby generators for power outages, water tankers for emergency relief, and systematic reservoir charging for continuity.
