Massive Southern Aqueduct leak prolongs water interruptions

The reduction in water supply to the affected areas, including Yellowwood Park and Woodlands, remains in place until further notice.

WHILE residents await completion of planned Southern Aqueduct works, a massive leak has developed during the pipeline charging, threatening to prolong water disruptions across affected areas.

The leak occurred at work package 6 at the site on Northbourne Road, Westville, while the pipeline was being charged on August 20 following the shutdown undertaken as part of the Southern Aqueduct Upgrade Project.

According to eThekwini Municipality, technical teams were required to shut down and isolate the line again overnight to enable repairs to commence safely this morning.

The extent of the leak prevented the continued charging of the PCP line. The reduction in water supply to the affected areas therefore remains in place until further notice.

Technical teams are attending to the repairs and further updates will be provided once the situation has been assessed.

Affected areas include:

Bayview, Coedmore, Havenside, Phumphele, Umhlathuzana, Woodhurst, Woodlands and Yellowwood Park.

The public can download the eThekwini Municipality mobile app to log faults or send a WhatsApp message to 073 1483 477. Alternatively, call the toll-free number 080 311 1111 or email Eservices@durban.gov.za.
