Operation Gijima rolled out in Montclair

Ward 64 welcomed the eThekwini Municipality’s Operation Gijima initiative to the area, as they tackled a number of service issues.

IN response to service delivery complaints, multi-disciplinary teams worked together on Operation Gijima in Montclair, Yellowwood Park, Mobeni and surrounding areas recently.

The aim of the operation was to address service delivery concerns.

Work done during the operation

The operation involved:

  • Street sweeping and weed removal.
  • Cutting of the grass.
  • Removal from stormwater drains and asphalt repairs.
  • Clearing illegal dumps.
  • Repairing water leaks.
  • By-law enforcement.

The South Durban Basin Supply Side and Area Based Operations Directorate led the operation.

Budget adjustments

Meanwhile, eThekwini Municipality approved the adjustments budget for the 2025/26 financial year, increasing it to R72b.

The revised budget provides for additional expenditure, the reprioritisation of funds, and the management of unforeseen and unavoidable costs, including critical storm damage.

According to a statement from eThekwini Municipality, a key component of the reprioritisation is to address urgent and critical storm damage affecting sanitation infrastructure to address sewer spillages and accelerate maintenance.

The sanitation capital budget has been increased from R604m to R1.2b.

What the adjusted budget means

The adjusted budget also makes provision for an increased allocation towards water infrastructure from R1.1b to R1.2b, with a strong focus on addressing non-revenue water.

The adjustment budget will accelerate the implementation of:
•⁠ ⁠Reservoir maintenance
•⁠ ⁠Trunk main maintenance
•⁠ ⁠Trunk main replacement
•⁠ ⁠Leak detection and repair
•⁠ ⁠Repair and upgrading of pressure-reducing valves
•⁠ ⁠Metering previously unmetered properties
•⁠ ⁠Replacement of old water meters in residential and business properties.

The housing budget has increased from R748.124m to R995.791m.
