WATCH: Flood victims look forward to better accommodation at Transnet Lodge

The flood victims, who have been living in a hall for more than four months, say they have had to live in poor conditions.

FOR more than four months, over 150 people who were left displaced due to the April floods, have been living at the Yellowwood Park Civic Hall.

Over the past couple of months, they raised their concerns about the living conditions, such as men, women and children forced to sleep in the close proximity, the lack of ablution facilities, and no feedback as to when they will be provided with other accommodation.

The conditions that the flood victims are currently living in at the hall.

This led some of the displaced victims to illegally occupy the Transnet-owned lodge in Montclair in July. They had broken the locks to the gates to gain entry. However, they were removed after Transnet won a court battle to evict them from the lodge on August 8.

However, MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba, conducted an oversight visit at the lodge on Wednesday, August 24. He said the lodge would be refurbished and thereafter used to accommodate the displaced families.
