Police clamp down on illegal street trading

The aim of the operation was to curb the illegal street trading taking place within the area, deal with traffic offences and provide crime prevention by being visible in the area.

IN an effort to clamp down on illegal street trading, metro police recently conducted a bylaw and traffic operation in various areas including Montclair, South Coast and Coronet roads.

Senior Superintendent Geraldine Stevens, a metro police spokesperson, said the operation followed numerous complaints from businesses, motorists, residents, and the general public.

“The aim of the operation was to curb the illegal street trading taking place within the area, deal with traffic offences and provide crime prevention by being visible in the area.

“We also wanted to clean up the area as the illegal traders leave a lot of dirt and grime where they trade, as they are not governed by the bylaws like the legal traders,” she said.

Stevens said nine bags of various goods, two gas bottles, and a table were seized.

“There were also 17 fines issued which include illegal trading and traffic fines. It must be said, that one cannot trade in a public space or on a public road without a permit.

“An application can be made to business support for a permit, which may or may not be granted, as there are only a limited amount of permits that can be issued to trade in a particular area,” she said
