Residents urged to attend cancer awareness day

IN support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, residents are urged to attend a cancer awareness day and get themselves screened.

The event will be held at the Montclair Recreation Hall on Wood Road on October 15, from 10:00 to 14:00.

Heidi Geyser, the event organiser, said the Verulam Cancer Support Group would be conducting screenings on the day.

“They will be screening 40 women for breast cancer, however, the women will need to book a slot. The group will also be doing prostate cancer testing for 40 men over the age of 40, who will also need to book. There will also be a cancer awareness programme and presentations on the day,” she said.

Heidi said there will also be various other fun activities on the day.

“We will be having a shave-a-thon, an aerobics class in the morning, as well as fun activities for the children, such as jumping castles and face-painting. There will be great prize giveaways, raffles, and a best-dressed ( in pink) competition. We are also hiring out tables for people to sell their products,” she said.

Heidi said there will also be a tea garden and pop-a-boob-loon and ‘win a prize‘’, from which they intend to use the monies raised to upgrade the hall, which will mark a 100 years old in August next year.

“We are hoping to raise money to buy paint, so we can continue with the renovations of the hall. We expect it to be a great day with lots of fun and laughter and of course, raising awareness about cancer.

“I decided to organise this event in honour of my dad, who battled cancer for many years before passing away in 2015, as well as my grandmother, who passed away due to breast cancer,” she said.
