THE year 2022 is almost over, and while we say goodbye to the year that was, let’s reminisce about the stories that tugged at our heartstrings or made us fuzzy and warm inside this year.

- Matriculant beats odds, tops province and country
DESPITE being classified as legally blind, Montclair resident Azra Ebrahim’s matric results earned her a top position in the province. She also placed second nationally among learners from special needs schools. The former Open Air School learner received three distinctions and a 79% average.
The determined lass commenced studies in law or psychology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Azra also holds a black belt in karate.
- The Bluff’s hero ‘Knighted’

THE BLUFF resident Blayne Knight received the SUN’s first Hero Award for his heroic efforts in saving the lives of four homeless men who were stuck in raging waters during the April floods.
The men were trapped under a bridge, and Knight’s lifeguard-training skills were useful when he dived into the churning water to swim to rescue the men. This was because the search-and-rescue unit could not access the area to render support to the firemen.
The surf lover and member of the Bluff RTL8 Team said he decided that it was ‘do or die’ when he tied a rope around his body, anchored it to his vehicle, and jumped into the murky water, saving the four men from drowning.
- Engen gifts R3m to Gift of the Givers

GIFT of the Givers received a whopping R3m donation from Engen in commemoration of the relief organisation’s 30th birthday this year.
Pledging their ongoing support and long-standing partnership with Gift of the Givers at a special handover ceremony, Engen donated R2.5m worth of fuel and R500 000 towards the organisation’s unforeseen emergency-relief costs. The donation brings Engen’s total support to the Gift of the Givers to R9.5m since 2019.
- Joy turned 100

THE BLUFF resident Joyce McDonald celebrated her 100th birthday with close friends and family who surprised her with a party at the Bluff Haven Rest Home in July.
Joyce, fondly known as Joy, developed various creative interests over the years and used her creativity to give back to those less fortunate than her.
With a heart for charity, Joy spent her days knitting and making clothing items for charity and children’s homes daily. The great-grandmother of two sadly passed away in September.
- The Bluff dad wins trolley dash

TO add to the unbeatable Black Friday specials, this year, Oxford Freshmarket gave away two trolley dashes. The Bluff resident Mario Stoffels was thrilled to have won The Bluff store’s competition and loaded his trolley while sprinting through the store during the two-minute free shopping spree. Stoffels and his wife, Shavone, were ecstatic to have loaded R7 682.04 worth of groceries and meat into their trolley during the trolley dash.
