Harsh sentence for Wentworth house robber

Through the efficiency of Wentworth police officers, the suspect was arrested three days after committing the crime.

A MAN who broke into a flat in Wentworth and ransacked the home before sexually abusing the domestic worker, was convicted and sentenced to 15 years direct imprisonment.

According to Wentworth police spokesperson, Captain Mbuso Gumede, it is alleged that on March 1, the complainant had left the flat she worked at and locked the door to assist her employer who was on her way to work.

“When the employee retuned back to the flat, she opened the door and was shocked when she saw the suspect inside. The suspect threatened her with a knife, ransacked the flat and then packed a boom box speaker, employee cellphone, snacks and cosmetics.

“The suspect thereafter pushed the employee onto a bed and sexually abused her. He then fled the scene on foot with the stolen items,” Gumede said.

Wentworth police arrested the suspect three days after the commission of the crime.

Detective Warrant Officer Walter Marais took over the investigation and through his informer network, he recovered the speaker which was positively identified by the complainant.

“A statement was obtained from the buyer of a speaker. All necessary evidence was gathered for court purposes and the accused was found guilty at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on July 5,” added Gumede.

He was sentenced to 15 years direct imprisonment on July 6, and was declared unfit to possess a firearm, and unfit to work with children in future.

Station commander of the Wentworth police station, Colonel Sinayo Mtshali, praised Marais and said he was highly commended by the station’s management team for his professional skills and dedication shown during the investigation of the case.
