Merebank school’s newly launched book club to empower learners
The aim of the book club is to improve learners' understanding skills and overall scholastic abilities.
HOPING to empower their learners with knowledge through reading, Merebank Secondary School officially launched its Chamber of Stories Book Club recently.
Julie Moodley, a teacher and the club coordinator, said the club aims to provide learners with enrichment through literature and encouragement to create a passion for reading.

“Its ultimate goal is to improve learners’ cognitive ability to read for meaning and understanding, in an environment that is less judgemental and more caring, as well as compassionate towards their abilities,” she said.
Moodley said that the club also aims to identify problematic learners and assist them.
“This will be done by encouraging reading for meaning and understanding skills through one-on-one interaction, with the ultimate aim being to improve their overall scholastic abilities.
“The club’s mission is to get learners to create a passion for reading while entering the imaginary realms through understanding. We also want to groom learners to read for enjoyment since this is when true understanding takes place,” she said.
Moodley added that the values of the book club revolve around the phrase Ubuntu, ‘I am because we are’, which encourages unity within the school. “This creates an understanding that if one fails, then everyone fails. We endeavour to encourage a helping spirit among our learners,” she said.
The school is also appealing for any book donations. If you want to donate, call the school on 031 461 1912.
