Temporary water supply shutdown in Durban South

Following the heavy rains that impacted large parts of Durban South, eThekwini Municipality has announced a temporary water supply shutdown to the area.

ETHEKWINI Municipality has informed residents of a temporary interruption in water supply in several areas as a result of the recent heavy downpour. Those most affected are residents and businesses in Merebank, Clairwood, and Jacobs, where water supply has been halted due to a burst pipe in the area of the Clairwood Logistics Park.

The shutdown is a precautionary measure to prevent contamination of the water supply, the municipality said in a statement. The repairs are under way, and water quality tests will be conducted before supply is resumed. The municipality expects the disruption to last until tomorrow.

Meanwhile, efforts are underway to restore water supply in the other storm-affected areas. Although emergency repairs are being carried out, there are still areas without water and others with intermittent supply as the system comes back online.

“Urgent interim repair work to restore supply has been done. However, some areas are still without water while others are experiencing intermittent supply as the system is recovering from the triple effect challenge. The triple effect challenge includes water rationing, curtailment which has been temporary uplifted, and the Pipeline 53 shutdown which was recently commissioned, coupled with the recent flooding,” read the statement.

Residents are asked to bear with the municipality as efforts at restoring water supply are intensified. The municipality also reminded the public that water rationing remains in force until further notice.
