Caxton Cares Square by Square gains momentum
With more blankets received, the SUN is eager to reach their goal and spread warmth to the elderly this winter.

THE Caxton Cares Square by Square Project has gained another few blankets.
The tally, currently is on 27 complete knee blankets, have enough blocks to make another six blankets. “We already have 33 blankets that can be donated to our senior citizens, who needs a little extra warmth this winter,” said the editor of the Southlands/ South Coast SUN, Roelien D’Amico.

“With so many crocheters and knitters on board, we are in need of wool. If anyone can buy just extra ball of wool to donate, it would really be appreciated,” she said.
D’Amico said she had no idea that the crochet and knit community was so big. “I always thought this craft was only for the older generation, keeping themselves busy at night, however, the younger generation are also contributing to this project. Apart from the trusted SUN staff member, Gerda Macgregor, who is a master in her craft, another three employees are contributing as well.
“We learn as we go along and with Gerda onboard, we can quickly ask for advice and guidance. At least I do not hear as many ‘It’s wrong, undo!’ than before. It has changed to ‘well done, you are doing great!’. Her enthusiasm, to teach others, has rubbed off on us as well,” she said.
There is still a long way to go before the SUN reaches its goal of 500 blankets. “But, we are well on our way. Thank you to every contributor and thank you to those who have donated wool and finished blocks.
