Coedmore Bridge: Reconstruction still on track

The reconstruction of Coedmore Bridge is going strong after the bridge was damaged during the 2022 floods.

THE rehabilitation of Coedmore Bridge is forging ahead, with critical construction milestones now in progress as part of the remediation efforts for damages caused by the 2022 floods.

Nolwandle Gcaba, ward 64 media liaison officer, said that concrete formwork and casting of the bridge barriers are in progress, as is the construction of bases for sidewalk handrails. Backfilling operations are also being carried out at the two abutments to enable the provision of the necessary structural support.

“They are currently working on a box cut on Yellowwood Park side on existing road to tie up with level of new bridge. ⁠Excavation for V-Drain on Coedmore Avenue from Old Mill Road to Kingfisher, identified work to assist channel rain / stormwater into drainage system, and polishing and cleaning of bridge underside for concrete finishing to look good,” she said.

She reaffirmed the project team’s commitment to delivering a safe, durable and well-completed bridge, and thanked the public for their ongoing patience and co-operation throughout the construction process.

The eThekwini Municipality has spent R48m on the rehabilitation of the 90m, two-lane bridge, which will also include pedestrian walkways. The project is funded by the National Treasury’s Municipal Disaster Response Grant.
