Spokesperson for PT Alarms Dhevan Govindasamy said no injuries were reported.

The motive for the attack is unclear, and the police are investigating an attempted murder.

Police spokesperson in Wentworth Captain Mbuso Gumede confirmed the incident.

“There were no injuries reported following the shooting. An unknown vehicle drove by and fired shots randomly at the tuckshop. The motive for the attack remains unclear, and no arrests have been made. Wentworth police are investigating a case of attempted murder,” said Gumede.

Last week several residents from Wentworth were arrested for assault and malicious damage to property. The residents are accused of attacking the police while they were trying to arrest wanted suspects in Wentworth flats.

The members of the Crime Prevention unit sustained injuries and a police van got damaged when a group of people threw stones at the police – accusing them of wrongful arrest.

The suspects appeared at the Wentworth Magistrate’s Court, and are due for their next court appearance soon.

Ward 68 councillor condemned the attack on police officers

Ward 68 councillor Aubrey Snyman said, “It just shows some people think they are the law unto themselves. It’s not about who is right or wrong but people should have respect for the law and let law enforcement do their job and not attack the very officers that tomorrow you need their help.”

Gumede added, “Members of the Crime Prevention unit were attacked at the flats in Wentworth while trying to arrest the suspects. Public Order Police (POP) were called for back-up. The community members were arrested for assaulting the police and damaging a State vehicle.”
