Man killed by truck in Clairwood, police investigate

The man, identified as Steven Mthwalume, was attempting to cross the road when a stationary truck at the traffic lights ran over him.

POLICE have opened a docket of culpable homicide after a man was run over by a truck on the corner of South Coast and Trent Roads.

Steven Mthwalume was attempting to cross the road when a truck at the traffic lights ran over him on May 4.

It is alleged that Mthwalume, who was well-known in the Clairwood CBD, attempted to crawl under the stationary truck when the driver, unaware of his presence, moved the truck and ran over him.

eThekwini District communication officer, Captain Carmen Rhynes, said Montclair police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

An eyewitness said, “Due to heavy traffic, Steven attempted to cross the road more quickly by crawling under the truck while the traffic light was red. Unaware that the light was about to change, he was still underneath when the truck began to move.”
