Course equips first responders in first aid and fire safety

Mediskills Healthcare Academy hosted a first aid course to equip first responders with the valuable skills needed during emergencies.

IN an effort to equip front-line responders with life-saving skills, Mediskills Healthcare Academy organised a first aid and fire safety training session for volunteers of Renegades Search and Rescue and Stealth Tactical Security. The session on May 3 at Alipore Primary School aimed to equip volunteers with emergency response skills, with particular emphasis on CPR, basic first aid, and fire safety.

Allison Andrews, founder of the Mediskills Healthcare Academy, said the initiative was a rewarding means to give back to causes close to her heart.

“It is an honour to make whatever contribution, like sharing my skills and knowledge, to organisations that do important work,” said Andrews.

The course consisted of theoretical lessons as well as practise tests, the central part of which involved CPR. They were tested by Mediskills instructors to ensure that the participants were qualified.

Renegades Search and Rescue’s Dawn Gounden highlighted the importance of such programmes, as first aid is a requirement. “This will assist victims who require assistance, especially in accidents, natural disasters and incidents that require services of a first responder. CPR was the most important part of the training, and members were assessed by the instructors from Mediskills. Our team wants to work with knowledge in hope to help save lives and bring closure because closure matters,” said Gounden.

Andrews thanked the Mobeni Fire Department for their active involvement and commitment to training and empowering the community.

She described the event as a success, saying the skills learnt will better prepare volunteers to meet the challenges of being first responders.
