Mandla Zuma is accused of killing Nonhlanhla Nhloko in the presence of her 14-year-old daughter.
Nhloko’s body was found in a shallow grave in front of their shack dwelling in Coedmore Road in January this year.
Her body was exhumed in January after residents raised concerns about her sudden disappearance, as she had not been seen in the community for some time.
This sparked suspicion among locals. The residents allegedly pressured Zuma to reveal what had happened to his partner, and he eventually confessed to burying her in a shallow grave. Police were then called in to assist with the exhumation of Nhloko’s body.

ANC branch chairperson in Ward 64, Mbongiseni Mazibuko, said the ongoing gender-based violence perpetrated to women tarnishes the image of all men, as it creates a perception that men cannot be trusted by the community or children.
“I recently offered a lift to three people, but they refused, saying they felt uncomfortable, men are no longer trusted.
“Acts like these are barbaric and should not be tolerated. What was done to the woman is completely unacceptable. This must come to an end. We need to hold a men’s conference so we, as men, can confront and discuss such issues. We want the accused to receive the sentence he deserves for what he did to that woman,” said Mazibuko.
The matter was adjourned until August 15 for further evidence to be presented.
