Nkosithandile Majola, a marketing intern at the centre, said the picnic was initiated by the desire to create a welcoming and inclusive space for families, especially those who have children living with disabilities.

“We wanted parents to relax and spend quality time with their children, while the children had fun and experienced the joy of simply being a child. It was also a way to bridge the gap between children with and without disabilities, raise awareness about autism, introduce our centre to the community and give parents a chance to connect and build supportive relationships with one another,” she said.

The picnic featured a range of interactive activities for children and adults, including classical games such as egg races, face painting and a Kid Zone with a jumping castle. There was also an arts and crafts stall selling the beadwork and other craft products made by the children. Throughout the day the centre’s occupational therapist and principal Ntombifuthi Mthethwa conducted free developmental screenings to new parents .

To conclude the festivities, the families enjoyed a live jazz performance by trumpeter Sifundo Myeza and pianist Andile Msane, adding a soulful touch to the fun and relaxing day.

Majola said that she wishes that events like this help build stronger advocacy for children living with disabilities. “We hope to see more accessible and safe public spaces created by the government to support children living with disabilities and their families. Every child must be seen, supported and included,” she said.
