WENTWORTH residents are up in arms and shaken after a 10-year-old boy, Che’dyn Ogle, was brutally mauled by a pit bull at a tuck shop opposite a primary school on Austerville Drive on October 27.

This is the second pit bull attack and third dog attack this month in Wentworth, raising serious concerns over animal control and community safety.

How it happened:

Chazlyn Ogle, Che’dyn’s mother, said that her son was going to buy something from the tuck shop when the pit bull rushed at him.

“The owner, according to my son, had left the gate open and the dog got out. He tried to run out of fear, but the dog caught him and just kept biting and throwing him from side to side,” said Chazlyn.

Jermaine Parsons, a by-stander who bravely intervened to rescue the boy, recalled the horror attack.

“I was driving along the road just past the school and saw children running in all directions and even running onto the road. When I looked to the side, I saw this young boy being mauled by a pit bull. The dog was literally picking the child up off the ground and tossing him back down and not letting go of its grip on the child’s calf,” said Parsons.

He added that people kept shouting at the dog but that was only aggravating the dog.

“I stopped my car and jumped out, even though I am also scared of dogs, but I pushed the dog off the boy. Luckily, it let him go and ran back into its owner’s garden. I picked up the boy and took him to hospital. You could see blood gushing from his leg,” said Parsons.

Damage caused:

Chazlyn said her son was brutally injured.

“The dog had taken a chunk out of Che’dyn’s calf on the one leg, and he sustained numerous bite wounds on the other leg. The hospital has told us his injuries are bad and will require skin grafting and physio because they fear it will affect his walking,” said Chazlyn.

The Ogle family have opened a case of negligence at Wentworth police station, calling for action and greater enforcement of pet ownership laws.

Previous incidents:

The attack has reignited public fury following two other attacks by dogs in the area last month. In the one incident an elderly woman was attacked by two pit bulls while walking home from doing her grocery shopping. The attack left the woman needing a skin graft for a big wound on her head as well as several bite marks. In a separate incident a schoolgirl was walking to school in the morning when she was attacked by dogs and sustained major bite wounds.

Residents are calling on authorities to take action to prevent more incidents like this from happening as they have become more common.
