During the launch MEC for the Department of Social Development, Mbali Shinga said, “We have reached an important milestone. After President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that every province should have a Khuseleka Centre, our province has been lagging behind.

“However, we are launching and handing over this facility which is a significant and positive response to that call. Women will be able to stay (in the centre) for longer periods during which they will participate in various skills development programmes.

She said the centre is well equipped even for those who has children as family rooms are available to accommodate them.

“We are grateful for our partnership with South African Breweries which has donated a substantial amount of resources to ensure the success of this project,” said Shinga.

The centre has been established as a flagship safe haven designed to provide:

  • Comprehensive,
  • Integrated and dignified services to survivors of GBV and related social harms.

“Khuseleka,” meaning to protect, reflects the centre’s core mission to offer:

  • Sanctuary
  • Healing
  • Pathways to justice.

According to the department, the newly opened centre will ensure survivors receive immediate, seamless and confidential support without the burden of navigating fragmented systems.
