Fynnland Primary School learner Karis Madamu secured the victory for her school in the District 6 Quiz Competition held by the City’s Library and Heritage Department.

THE Grosvenor Library hosted young quizmasters from various schools in the district to take part in the District 6 Quiz Competition on October 10.

This quiz was attended by Grade Seven learners and forms part of the City’s Libraries and Heritage Department’s efforts to enhance critical thinking and literacy among young people.

The learners were tested on three local books, namely, Finding My Family by Govender Krish, Rejected Treasure by Owam Shangase and The Cursed Touch by Raashida Khan. The competition offered learners the chance to engage with homegrown literature while enhancing their comprehension and critical thinking skills.

After various elimination rounds, Karis Madamu from Fynnland Primary School emerged first, followed by Jevante Chetty from Kamalinee Primary School who came out second and Sibusisiwe Mzimela from Austerville Primary School in third.

Karis said she was overjoyed to have won. “I was so excited to have won; I did not expect to win the quiz. I was so nervous heading into the quiz and thought the other learners would perform better than me,” she said. She was also proud to have been able to represent her school.

Somikazi Bonani, Grosvenor librarian, said the event was well-attended but could have been better if they marketed it more. “We haven’t hosted a programme like this since Covid. Next year, we plan to expand the tournament to inter-district competitions where winners from each district will compete,” she shared.

She thanked all those who made the day a success, including Rene Harry, who acted as quiz mistress; Nkanyiso Mteshane, the timekeeper; Sivi Mosia and Rita Moodley, the scorekeepers; and Ayanda Mavuso and Mondli Ngcongo, who acted as adjudicators.

The competition culminated in a prize-giving for the top performers.
