After 27 years of hard work and determination to build a reputation for the school, the St Mary's Primary School principal has retired.

WITH cheers ringing out and bittersweet emotions in the air, St Mary’s Primary School bid farewell to a person whose influence extended beyond the classroom walls. After 27 years principal Roshan Ramdheen has retired, leaving behind a legacy of innovation, transformation and education excellence.

From the moment he assumed the role in 1998 as the school’s youngest principal to date, Ramdheen set out on a journey that would revolutionise the academic environment of St Mary’s Primary School. As he embarks on a well- deserved retirement, the school reflects on a legacy that will motivate learners for generations to come.

From the start Ramdheen’s vision changed the school. Under his leadership, St Mary’s saw the construction of its first administrative complex, installation of security and intercom systems and the installation of spectator stands on school grounds.

His commitment to the well-being of learners was equally unwavering.

Acting principal of the school Ramesh Singh said, “He helped refurbish the toilet facilities, install 15 filtered water stations throughout, installed air-cons in every classroom, introduced interactive smart boards, built a robotics room equipped with 25 laptops and launched a new block of classrooms.”

Ramdheen’s leadership was marked by an equal focus on infrastructure and academic success, the result being an environment in which teachers and students could thrive.

In tribute to his contributions, the school’s hall was recently renamed “The Roshan Ramdheen Hall”, a testament to a man whose legacy can be seen in every corner of the establishment.

The farewell celebrations continued when teachers, friends and family gathered at the Merebank Community Centre to recognise Ramdheen’s distinguished career and wave him off into retirement. The night was filled by heartfelt tributes, memories and appreciation for a principal who gave his life to education and community development.

Ramdheen shared that this new chapter is an exciting adventure that he is ready to embark on alongside his wife, Sherine, who also just retired.

“I am ready to start the next chapter of my life in retirement knowing full well that I have made my contribution to St Mary’s Primary School and to the education sector. I have handed over the reins to a strong team led by Singh. The school is destined to reach greater heights,” he said.

As Ramdheen retires, the work that he initiated, his vision, values and unremitting quest for excellence will remain a benchmark for the school.
