Sink or swim: Schools compete in new swimming league

Six schools from KZN competed in the first of many friendly galas aimed at promoting school swimming after Covid-19.

GROSVENOR Girls’ High School held the first inter-school swimming gala, which forms part of a new coastal school swimming league in KZN, on February 11. The new league aims to promote school swimming, especially after Covid-19.

Six schools came together, all wanting to boost their swimming programmes. Participating schools included host Grosvenor Girls High School, Northlands Girls High School, Pinetown Girls High School, George Campbell High School, Inanda Secondary School and Queensburgh Girls High School.

The swimmers competed in a number of races, from the regular strokes to relay ladder races, while under the scorching Durban sun. Northlands Girls High took home top honours, followed by Grosvenor Girls High in second and Queensburgh Girls High in third.

Robyn Wyngaard, the swim coach at Grosvenor Girls High School, said this gala is the result of KZN school sports co-ordinators working together to create a league that is fair and provides good support. “Many of these schools are newly reintroducing swimming, and the league provides girls with the opportunity to return to competitive sport on an equal level,” she said.

One of the most memorable moments for Wyngaard was the final freestyle relay, where Grosvenor Girls’ High pulled ahead to win.

Wyngaard praised her swimmers for their hard work.

“I would like to commend my girls for their dedication, enthusiasm and effort, especially considering they had only one and a half months to prepare. Every swimmer gave her best, and I am extremely proud of the team. A special mention goes to Layla van Vuuren, who placed first in all her races,” said Wyngaard.

She also extended her thanks to all teachers who helped in ensuring the day’s success.

Wyngaard added that this was the first time they had hosted a gala with other schools, and she was very proud of what they had accomplished.
