‘Dirtbin’ Durban must get its recycling house in order

Durban and surrounding areas (including the Bluff) are looking very shabby

EDITOR – Referring to the article of Cindy Willis dated 16 November, I would like to invite the editor to visit the Bluff refuse dumping site, this is certainly not a recycling depot.

It is in deplorable state and very unsafe because of the squatter camp next to the refuse dumping site.

Recycling is definitely not practised there. What has happened about the orange bags is very tragic, as many people were just learning the habit of recycling and then the orange bag project fell away.

The municipality should take time to educate children and adults about how important recycling is – it is extremely important. Many years ago we grew up with the saying ‘Zap it in the Zibi’ and a cartoon picture of an ostrich putting rubbish into a bin. Durban and surrounding areas (including the Bluff) are looking very shabby – the name Dustbin instead of Durban is soon going to become a reality. All residents must check the verges outside their properties. Why is building material left to rot outside residents’ houses? Have people lost pride in how they live?
