Steve, Jackie in last 16 of Oppenheimers pairs

Next Sunday, which is Easter Sunday, 20 April will feature the monthly Rawson’s fours skins.

ON Wednesday morning, Jumbo Nel and Herbie Roux were overall winners in the Wanderers Bowling Club roadrunners pairs, which was played for the first time in its new format of two 10 end sessions.

Their score of 4+16 was best of the 16 team field.

First session went the way of Ken Thomas and Chris Klopper with +9 and the women pair of Joan Bruce and Gerrie Jackson were second session winners with a +7. Lofty Cawthorne (R40) and Daphne Els (R20) shared the 60/40 board spoils while Maria Cavanagh won the meat raffle comprising wors, mince and cheese. Nobody chose 4-6-8 to win the lotto, which is a R102 carry-over.

In the afternoon midweek league challenge, Steve Van Rooyen’s team went down by seven shots to second placed Harry Gibb which might just put them out of contention as they have a bye next week, which is the final week of play. If Gibb wins that one, they will also win the section and go through to the playoffs.

Dennis Gericke’s side also went down 11-24. Dennis says the whole team played poorly. Lofty’s side finally had a win of 24-13, but probably too late to have a positive impact on the final result.

Saturday’s 5th round of the league saw all five Wanderers BC sides gaining the bonus point or better. The A side scored an ever-so-near full house seven when Lofty’s side, unbeaten thus far, was peeled playing the last end and dropped a single point to give opponents their only two points. Arnie won by five and Richard by two to get a 5-2 against Queensburgh away. The B and C sides, both playing at home against Berea A and Parkhill B respectively, both got full house fives, Dennis winning by six and Steve by three for the B and Jimmy and Andy each winning by three shots for the Cs. The D and E sides playing away to Amanzimtoti F and Verulam A respectively both secured the bonus point, thanks to good wins by Errol Pienaar and Ken Koch.

On Sunday morning, the Oppenheimer resumed. It was this scribe’s error last week to report that only Steve and Jackie had made it through when in fact Kim Hawkins and his wife Lorinne had also made it and both teams were to continue at Stella Park. Unfortunately, though, Kim and Lorinne did not play as Kim’s dad died the day before play was due. The club conveys its condolences to Kim and his family. Steve and Jackie managed to win their game against L Souter from Hillary and have made it to the last 16. They now move to Amanzimtoti and play resumes all day on Sunday, 27 April.

Sunday morning also featured the Wanderers monthly breakfast trips, which attracted 28 teams from all over. It was a close tussle for first place, with Arnie Harper Heather Beselaar and Tommy Simpkins stealing the show by a shot on 4+20 from second placed finishers Dennis Gericke, Joe McNamara and Dave Faifer who scored 4+19.

First and second session went the way of Richard Hendicott, Anthony Carr and Terrance McGlynn – +12 the first, and Eric and Anne Smit and Trish Overington +10 – the second. Sportsman’s prize on 0-15 went the way of Toti visitors Herbie Hoffmann, Paul Steele and Brian Cox. Stella Park’s Geoff Atkins won the meat raffle and two 60/40 boards were drawn. Main winners were Cynthia Addinall and Jeff Bolt (R40 each) with Andy Cloete and Ken Thomas raking in the minor spoils of R20 each. Next Sunday, which is Easter Sunday, 20 April will feature the monthly Rawson’s fours skins and players are asked to do two things. Firstly, confirm your attendance with Bob Hayward on 076-403-2265 and note that it will be an early start. The club wants to be on the greens and playing at 8.30am.

There was no snowball winner last week as Brian Gibbs was not present. Friday is Good Friday and the start of the Easter weekend, so the snowball draw will thus be held on Thursday. Eric Redman will also stage another pub quiz of 60 questions on the usual basis. Entry is free to members and teams of four will compete for prizes, the first two and last team getting these. Any team getting every question correct will receive free membership for a year. Seating is ‘first come first served’ so get there early to avoid disappointment. The various meat winners last Friday were: Mutton pack – Hennie Geldenhuys; chicken pack – Thomas Simpkins; sirloin steaks – Russell Knott; rump steaks – Eric Kitchenbrand; pork ribs – John Campbell; chicken – Leon Hauptfleisch.
