Van Rooyen is Wanderers BC men’s champ

Richard Hendicott won the huge pork roast in a raffle.

IN club competitions played at Wanderers Bowling Club during the week, Clive Symons beat Lofty Cawthorne 21-20 coming from 20-12 down, Bob Hayward beat Graham Funnell 21-5 having led all the way, while Steve Van Rooyen beat Shaun McAlister 21-19 in the first semi.

Clive Symons then beat Bob Hayward 21-14 in the second semi and the following day he and Steve Van Rooyen played the finals.

Steve led from start to finish and ended up the winner at 21-11. He will now represent the club in the ‘Champion of champions’ event along with the women’s winner Michelle Bezuidenhout on 2 and 3 August.

In the women’s drawn pairs, Joan Bruce and Barbara Neill beat Margaret Kitchenbrand and Cynthia Addinall 19-13, Nicola Bauristhene and Jo-Anne Jordaan beat Heather Beselaar and Gwen Tait 20-17, Lorraine du Preez and Val McCaffrey beat Lorraine Smith and Sonja Kock 28-9 and Mary Rust and Lorinne Hawkins beat Gerrie Jackson and Anne Smit 22-15. The semis are carded for 2 August.

Last Wednesday’s Lyn Wild’s pairs attracted a smaller than usual field, but Jumbo Nel – on crutches – hobbled his way there to lend support. This after his earlier fall in which he broke his leg. He ended up having quite a good day. He picked the right number to win the meat raffle, then chose three correct numbers (1-4-6) to be the only lotto winner, picking up R152 for his troubles. Brian Osman won R40 on the board draw. Lofty Cawthorne took the minor spoils (R20).

Both sessions were won with +10s, and had either of the teams won the “other” session by just one point, they would have won the main overall prize. Such is the fickleness of bowls. Raj and Russell Rangiah won the first, and Bob Hayward and Eric Smit won the second. The overall winners on the day were Robbie Carr and Shaun McAlister with a 4+8.

On Sunday, 20 July the Rawson’s fours skins event took place. Sportsman’s prize went the way of Shaun McAlister, Dave Faifer, Brian Hollis and Ron Gillespie with a 4-5. First session went to Eric Smit, Kim Hawkins, Anne Smit and Lorinne Hawkins with a 10+7, while second session went to Bob Hayward, Ken Koch, Lofty Cawthorne and Steve Van Rooyen with 8+6. Third place went to Arnie Harper, Jimmy Neill, Lorraine Du Preez and Gwen Tait with a 16+7, second place went to Richard Hendicott, Jeff Bolt, Mitch Mitchley and Rob Atkinson with 16+10 and the winners – and on the perch for R150 next month were Dennis Gericke, Chris Klopper, Peter Prenger and Gordon Chislett with 17+12. Richard Hendicott won the huge pork roast in a raffle. Jackie Freeman and Jeff Bolt won R40 each in the two board draws and Mary Rust and Jeff Bolt (again) won R20 each.

Last Friday Ken Koch missed the opportunity of winning R1100 in the snowball as he was not present for the draw. The various meat winners were: Mutton pack John Campbell; deboned leg of lamb Mark Jackson; chicken pack Ernie Lochner; pork ribs Richard Hendicott; rump steak Eric and Patti Redman; chicken Russell Knott.
