FIVE of the seven Umbilo Harlequins Cricket Club teams were in action last weekend, with the top team taking on Chatsworth United in a 20-over group match at Harlequins on Sunday morning, 9 October.
Despite the wicket having some moisture content, it appeared to be well compressed.
The outfield was shoddy, thick and yielding. Winds were unabatingly fresh. The atmosphere was dank with low cloud, fortuitously devoid of rain which appeared perpetually imminent during the course of the entire match.
Jonathan van Eck contributed 40 runs, comprising four sixes and two fours, towards a century opening partnership. His innings consisted of exquisitely timed and powerfully struck pull and hook shots, predominantly to the mid-wicket boundary. Four of these were sixes and two of which were fours. Quins accumulated a total of 122 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs. Seamer Abdur Rehman bowled his in-swingers splendidly for Quins during the initial part of Chatsworth United’s innings to capture one wicket for 12 runs in four overs. Andre Potgieter delivered his medium-paced away swingers with impeccable accuracy into the wind, beating the outside edge of opposition bats on multiple occasions. He took two wickets for 16 runs in four overs. United were 16 runs short of Quins’ target on completion of the 20 over allocation, for the loss of five wickets.
The sixth team beat DHS/Rhythm 6 in a division five encounter at Danville Park on Saturday, The third side lost its 30 over division one match to Umkomaas first team at Harlequins one on Sunday afternoon and Quins’ fourth team defeated Silver Saints in a 30 over division two league match at Harlequins 2.
On Sunday, 16 October, the first side has a bye, The second team is scheduled to play Chatsworth United 2 in a 40 over challenge reserve match at Lt King Park, Fynnland. The third team takes on Merebank 2 at Harlequins 2. The fourth team has a bye. The fifth team engages with Phoenix 6 at Sidmore.
