Spack’s men ascend drawn bowls winner’s rostrum
The greens will be busy this weekend.

WEDNESDAY’S Chicken Shack pairs played at Wentworth Bowling Club was won by the home side comprising Brian Smith and Ellen Loots who sneaked ahead of the second side of Chris Pozyn and Chad Wilson by one shot.
Second session prize went to Ken Thomas and Andy Cloete.
The first 60/40 board was won by Chris and Andy Cloete with Dave Carroll taking the second prize. The second board went to Gerald ‘C’ Royle and Ken Koch. Maria Cavanagh made the right choice on the meat raffle sheet and took home the generous roast pork.
Thursday morning heralded the monthly Rawsons breakfast trips competition. Julie and Shaun Sutherland teamed up with George Glaves and accumulated a very respectable four plus 25 to take first prize. In second spot were Gary Moffat, Bridget White and Lilah Nel who are consistently on the leader board. Tom and Andy Cloete played with Eric Coetzee and took the second session prize. Congratulations are extended to the team from Rawsons Properties who won their first game since the inception of the competition. Dave Carroll and Kurt Spack shared the spoils from the first 60/40 board and George Coetzee and Honey Kitchenbrand were winners on the second board. Honey maintained her winning streak and won a bottle of Rawsons red wine and Geanne Mitchell scooped the rest of the prizes and took home the raffled whisky and a bottle of red wine.
Friday’s Bluff Meat Supply men’s bowls saw the drawn side of Kurt Spack, Herbie Hoffman and Ben Venter take first place on the winner’s rostrum. Graham Bransby and new member, Troy Garland, ended the morning in second place. Herbie Roux , Dave Matthews and Dudley Sanders left with the sportsmen’s prize. Two 60/40 boards were drawn. The first board’s booty went to Ken Koch and Julia. Graham Bransby and Travis Engelbrecht shared the winnings from the second board. Dave Carroll continued his winning streak and took home the raffled pork roast. Troy Garland was initiated into the bowling fraternity by winning the coveted beef roast.
On Sunday morning the women gathered at the club to play the last of the preliminary rounds of the women’s open singles. The semi-finals of this competition will be played on Saturday, 8 April at 9am. The semi-finalists are Maria Cavanagh, Gwen Tait, Eileen du Plessis and Sharon de Kock. Members are encouraged to support these women from the sideline.
The greens will be busy this weekend. Following the women’s semi finals, one of the men’s sides will take the greens to do battle in the first round of their league. Play starts at 1pm. On Sunday three sections in the Oppenheimer mixed pairs competition will strive for supremacy on Wentworth BC’s greens. Play starts at 8.30am and will involve three rounds of bowls. This promises to be an exciting weekend of bowls for spectators and the community is invited to pop round to the club to enjoy the competition.
Members of the community who would like to try their hand at the game of bowls are reminded of the Family and Friends development bowls played on Wednesday afternoons at 3pm. Newcomers are welcome.
