Weekend hikes to offer scenic vistas

Follow a variety of paths meandering around this beautiful nature reserve.

DURBAN Ramblers Hiking Club hikes up to Tower in Shongweni on Saturday, 26 August.

Meet at 1.30pm at the closed Assagay Hotel/Engen Garage at 571 Kassier Road to drive through to the starting point at Denny’s Mushrooms, off Kassier Road.

This hike takes hikers up to the top of the hill to Clifton Tower overlooking Giba Gorge and the city and surrounds in the distance. Join in for drinks afterwards at the Polo Pony. This hike of about 9km is graded two to three, strenuous with two steep uphills.

On Sunday, 27 August hikers will explore Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve (KSNR) in Yellowwood Park. Call hike leader Stella Wells on 078-319-8979.

KSNR is regarded as one of the finest coastal, riverine forest, bush clump and grassland mosaic areas remaining in the greater Durban area. Game viewing is almost always guaranteed. This hike will follow a variety of paths meandering around this beautiful nature reserve. This is not a full day hike. For those wanting to remain behind after the hike, bring your own for post-hike drinks and a picnic. Meet at 8am at main parking area. Entrance costs R30. This 12km hike is graded two.
