Eddies’ trio claim resounding breakfast trips victory at Wentworth BC
CLUB competitions at Wentworth Bowling Club are in full swing.

The men’s nominated pairs require a semi-final to be played between Dave Carroll and Robin de Gouviea who will face up against Brian Smith and Jumbo Nel to decide who will compete in the final against Hilton Lassak and Thys Moolman.
The men’s senior singles has seen Terry Michelson play his way through to the final. He is awaiting the result of the semi-final between Brian Smith and Johan Nel.
Friday’s Bluff Meat Supply men’s bowls was won by Jumbo Nel, Herby Roux and Claude Newman. Second place prize went to Brian Smith, Joe McNamara and Ivor Aylward. The sportsmen’s prize was awarded to Ken Thomas, Dave Carroll and Ben Venter. Phil ‘The Milkman’ Hill and Ken Thomas had their lucky charms with them when they chose the numbers on the meat raffle sheets. Phil left with the pork roast and Ken took home the beef roast. Two 60/40 boards were drawn. Tomcat Cavanagh scooped the first prizes on both boards and Ken Koch and Dirk Venter pocketed the second prizes on the first and second boards respectively.
The Grand Rapid Big Jim Spurs played at the end of August was won by Greg Dorrofield and Jorge Santos. Robin de Gouveia and Margaret Walters claimed the first session prize and Spider Williams and Jay Retief played their way into the second session winner’s spot. Jumbo Nel and Zoë Dougall shared the spoils from the first 60/40 board and Belinda Lassak made a clean sweep on the second board when she pocketed both prizes. The roast meat raffle was won by Kurt ‘Swiss Roll’ Spack.
Wednesday morning’s Chicken Shack pairs competition was won by Julie Sutherland and Amanda Ninow who accumulated a healthy four plus 18 shots. The second prize went to Jorge Santos and Phil ‘The Milkman’ Hill who were eight shots behind the winners. Robbie Carr and Jo-Jo Jordaan claimed the second session prize. Eric Coetzee and Dave Carroll were recipients of the prizes from the first 60/40 board and Rob Armstrong left the club with a substantial size meat roast.
After a hearty breakfast on Thursday morning, the regular competitors in the Rawsons breakfast trips took the greens to do battle for supremacy. Eddie Human and Brian and Paula Osman proved too strong for their opposition when they built up a resounding four plus 27 score to take top honours. Jorge Santos made three podium positions in a row when he teamed up with JJ Jonker and Moses Nuba to claim the morning’s second prize. Second session prize went to Dave Carroll, Robin de Gouviea and Buck Boettiger. The raffled whiskey went to the club staff member, Lee and the bottles of Rawsons red wine were won by JJ Jonker and Petro Nash from Rawsons Properties. Ken Koch will be contributing to the family’s Sunday lunch after he won the raffled roast.
A women’s lunch has been planned for Wednesday, 6 September at the Chicken Shack. Women wishing to join in are invited to meet at the club at 12.30pm in their club colours.
Condolences are extended to Phyllis Maritz and family on the death of their husband and father, Deon who was a staunch supporter of WBC. His regular visits and boomingly voiced opinions will be sorely missed. Prayers for a speedy recovery are with Brian Smith’s family, Marlene, Sheri and Shaun who have been hospitalised following a motor vehicle accident. The club wishes them a rapid recuperation as they work towards healing.
The women’s drawn trips competition will resume on Friday, 8 September at 1.30pm and the veteran’s singles on Saturday at 9am. Women are requested to check the board for the draws.
Any members of the community wishing to try their hand at the game of bowls are invited to attend the development bowls on Wednesday afternoons. Bowls is a game for people of any age and is an activity that can be mastered from a young age.
