MOTHER Nature won the battle of bowls over the last two weeks as she unleashed her fury on Durban and forced the closure of many greens, including those at Wentworth Bowling Club.
The re-opening of the greens resulted in a flurry of club competitions being played in an effort to complete the year’s quota.
The women’s veteran singles final will be contested between Sharon de Kock and Eileen du Plessis. The drawn trips final will see Sharon take to the green again with her team of Kathy van der Merwe and Jenny Greef as they attempt to lift the trophy from Cheryl Waterman, Zoë Dougall and Margaret Walters.
The men’s trips team of Johnny du Plessis, Victor McCreanor and Moses Ndava have won through to the final and await the result of the second semi-final to establish who their opponents will be.
Friday’s Bluff Meat Supply men’s bowls was won by Jorge Santos, Kurt Spack and Troy Garland with Norman Moore, Terry Micholson and Claude Newman taking second spot. Sportsmen’s prize went to Graham Barnsby, Tom Cloete and John Minnaar. Ken Koch and Jumbo Nel chose the lucky numbers on the raffle sheets and they won the pork and beef roasts. Joe Vorster and Maria Cavanagh shared the spoils from the 60/40 board.
This week bowlers will make good use of the greens as a plethora of competitions are played. Bowlers in the monthly Chicken Shack pairs will take to the green on Wednesday morning and Thursday will see competitors in the Rawsons breakfast trips battle for prizes. Play starts at 9am on both days but bowlers on Thursday are reminded that the breakfast is served before the bowls commence so they need to be at the club early.
On Friday the club will host the annual Kingdom Slots sponsored fun day. This promises a day of entertainment and spectators are invited to visit Wentworth Bowling Club to be part of the excitement and festivities. The kitchen will be open and will provide snacks and meals.
On Saturday the women will play the first round of the drawn pairs competition. Play will start at 9am.
Sunday heralds the monthly Grand Rapid Spur Big Jim pairs competition and bowlers will try to scoop the first prize from regular winners, Jorge Santos and Greg Dorrofield.
Outdoor bowling is a classic sport that goes back hundreds of years and continues today at Wentworth. The retro sport we love is modern-day fun out in the fresh air – even Walt Disney was an avid lawn bowler. It is a sport the whole family can enjoy. On Sunday afternoon spectators enjoyed watching Matthew Lassak’s two youngsters show their dad how it’s done as they continually drew their bowls to the jack. Anyone wishing to try their hand at the game is invited to attend the club’s development bowls played on Wednesday afternoons. Bowls are available and play starts at 3pm.
The committee and club members extend condolences to Robin de Gouviea and his family following the death of their father.
Members are reminded of the annual general meeting to be held on Sunday, 12 November at 2pm. The meeting will be preceded by 10 ends of bowls.
The Game Changer’s kitchen will prepare their daily specials and the regular pub meals on offer to members and visitors. Contact Marike on 071-594-1225 for further details.
