GIVEN that one green at the Wentworth Bowling Club is closed for maintenance, there was an excess of bowling activity last week.
Action started with the Wednesday afternoon development bowls when, once again, new faces were welcomed to the greens.
Winners after the afternoon’s effort were Victor McCreanor, Sharon Uppink and Norman ‘The Blacksmith’ Webster. Zoë Dougall, Albert van Niekerk and Ruth Petzer did enough to take home the biscuit prize. Eileen du Plessis and Albert van Niekerk shared the takings from the day’s 60/40 board.
On Thursday afternoon Eileen du Plessis and Sharon de Kock entered the fray on B green to contest the title of veteran singles champion. Spectators were kept glued to their seats when Eileen, after a slow start, fought her way back into the mix. The game ended when Sharon drew the 21 shots required to win the title by three shots.
Thanks go to Maria Cavanagh for her competent marking of the final.
Friday morning’s Bluff Meat Supply men’s bowls was greeted with the large group of stalwarts who enjoy the camaraderie of this long-standing weekly event. Jorge Santos and Kurt Spack made the morning theirs when they amassed a plus 22 score to walk away with the day’s spoils. Rob de Gouviea, Ivor Aylward and Derek Stevens were awarded the second prize for their effort. The sportsmen’s prize went the way of Chris Pozyn, Butch Ellis and Albert van Niekerk. The ever popular raffled roasts sponsored by Bluff Meat Supply saw Flo Harper leave the club with a substantial leg of pork and Snowy Howes slipped the beef joint into his bag before his departure.
Sunday morning saw two trips finals being contested. The men’s side comprising Johnny du Plessis, Moses Ndava and Vic MacCreanor won a tight contest against Thys Moolman, Terry Micholson and Des MacAllister to take the title. Sharon de Kock, Kathy van der Merwe and Jenny Greef did enough to keep Cheryl Waterman, Zoë Dougall and Margaret Walters at bay and ensure their names are recorded on the honours board for 2017.
On Sunday afternoon the club held its annual general meeting to hear reports on the year’s achievements and elect an incoming committee for 2018. The new club president is Gwen Tait, ably supported by Rob Armstrong and vice-president, Honey Kitchenbrand as secretary and Terry Micholson as treasurer. Cheryl Waterman and Thys Moolman remain as competition secretaries and Dave Carroll will continue as greenkeeper. Ellen Loots has been elected house manager. The selection committees will comprise Maria Cavanagh, Eileen du Plessis, Cora van der Westehuizen and Jay Retief for the women and Brian Smith, Rob de Gouveia, Brendon Davis and Ben Newton for the men.
The Game Changer’s kitchen will prepares their daily specials and the regular pub meals on offer to members and visitors. Contact Marike on 071-594-1225 for details.
