Decisive Quins 6 bowlers deny Chatsworth team victory

Quins second team beat Lindelani 2 who had some pretty skillful fielders in their midst.

SIX of Umbilo Harlequins Cricket Club’s eight cricket teams engaged in league match activities last weekend.

On Saturday, Quins’ sixth team took on Simplex Reservoir Hills Cricket Club in a recently formulated T20 competition off Smith Drive at the Lt King Park venue.

In 24 deliveries, Simplex RHCSC 4 had already accrued 29 runs without the loss of any wickets. However, the introduction of dual right arm unorthodox slow bowlers combined with commendable catching by Quins’ fielders rendered immediate and profound success. Dieter Liebenberg captured three wickets for eight runs in four overs and Ozzy Charlton took three wickets for 11 runs in three overs. This left the tail-enders to be cleaned up by fast bowler Russell Mackenzie, who claimed three wickets without conceding a run in six deliveries, to restrict the opposition to a mere 59 runs in just 13,2 overs. Chase Garner took three catches, Gavin Hazel managed two, Darryl Lavender and Lionel Cow Gaze caught one each. Quins lost four wickets in surpassing the target total by four runs in 69 deliveries, primarily through the astute endeavours of opening batsman Jason Rouse who got 29 runs.

On Sunday morning, Quins’ Challenge League team took on Dawn Heights from Stanger at Harlequins 1 in a 50 over a side match from 9am. Quins again lost the coin toss and the opposition had no hesitation to request Quins to bat first on a slightly yielding wicket surface due to belated preparation on the day preceding the match. Despite the bowler friendly conditions due to the still curing wicket, Quins batsmen failed to apply themselves appropriately for the 50 over format. With the exception of opener Momadtalha Motalla who played a flamboyant innings of 22 runs, predominantly his favourite cut and late cut strokes combined with some pull shots, and number 10 batsman Mohamed Patel who played with gay abandon, bashing many a lofted straight and on drive, a few of which went over the boundary, no-one else contributed with any significance. This caused Quins to succumb to a well below par total of 127 runs in the 27th over.

Simplex RHCSC seemed to be in the ascendancy for most of their innings, however the introduction of medium pacer Faiyas Safri late into the innings brought a shard of hope for Quins when three wickets fell in quick time. Faiyas took three wickets for 23 runs in five overs. Simplex RHCSC surpassed Quins’ total in the 39th over, winning the match by three wickets.

The U11 opposition scratched their 30 over match, however the U13 team went out to John Dory Drive to a venue which did not have its wicket prepared at all. Newlands East Kense were dismissed by Quins’ bowling attack for 66 runs in the 16th over. Keaton Venter and Kevin Van Der Berg took two wickets each. Quins surpassed the target for the loss of just two wickets in the 15th over. Keaton Venter scored 18 runs, Jaedin Reddi accrued 19 runs and Jordan Dekker was undefeated with 10 runs. Quins U13s won by eight wickets.

Quins’ second team beat Lindelani 2 who had some pretty skillful fielders.

Results from the fourth and fifth teams are currently unknown.
