Wentworth Bowling Club back on the greens
Masked, screened and armed with sanitiser, bowlers are now able to spend time on the green, challenging their friends to competitive.

Bowlers throughout South Africa have been handed a welcome relief from tight restrictions resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic.
Restrictions and protocols required by Bowls South Africa cannot dampen the enthusiasm of the lawn bowlers at Wentworth Bowling Club. Masked, screened and armed with sanitiser, they are now able to spend time on the green, challenging their friends to competitive.
Friday’s Tomasina’s men’s casual bowls has resumed and the regular participants enjoy the friendly rivalry as they battle for supremacy. On Friday, 19 February, it was Ian Hayes who teamed up with Mark Russell-Bolton to claim the top spot for the day. Jorge Santos and Wayne Booysen ended the morning’s play with second spot overall.
Gees Dennis and Maurice Faulkner were the recipients of the sportsmen’s prize. The roast pork raffle went the way of Brian Smith with Jim Hayes and Robin de Gouveia sharing the spoils from the 60/ 40 board.
Saturday morning, 20 February, saw the remaining six Wentworth novice bowlers head off to Durban Bowling Club to face their opposition in the second round of the Port Natal Novice singles competition. Congratulations are extended to Gees Dennis, Kearan Lassak and Denzil Lewis, who have bowled themselves into the third round. Accompanying the three men will be the club’s two novice women, Trudy Rautenbach and Amelia Booysen who will play their first round games.
The final of the 2020 Men’s Nominated Trips competition was played on Saturday afternoon between Spider Williams, Vic McCreanor and Matt Lassak and Simon Garland’s team comprising Kurt Spack and Troy Garland. In a tense game in which neither team was prepared to allow their opposition a runaway, it was Spider’s team who had more shots on the board after 21 ends and earned their name in gold on the honours board.
This week the club will be busy as it hosts the monthly Wentworth breakfast on Thursday morning, 25 February, at 9am. The club welcomes Renise Dunn who has been appointed to run the club’s kitchen and will prepare the pre-match breakfast for the players. Friday morning’s Tomasina bowls will commence at 9am.
On Saturday morning, 27 February, the club will provide a venue for the ACP market vendors from 8am. Sunday morning heralds the monthly Grand Rapid Spur Big Jim competition.
The members of Wentworth Bowling Club wish Bluff Bowling Club’s Gary and Lila Moffat ‘bon voyage’ as they embark on their new adventure and relocation in Ireland. Gary and Lila have a long association with Wentworth
Bowling Club and they will be sadly missed both on the greens and socially.
