Wentworth Bowling Club members dress in pink in support of the justice for Yolandi Botes campaign

A determined Dawn Spack skipped her trips team, comprising Jo-Jo Jordaan and Kitty Schaefer, to a win over Cheryl Waterman, Ruth Petzer and Anne Bonthrone to claim the crown as women’s trips champions for 2021.

The rain stayed away on Friday, 14 May and Wentworth Bowling Club’s (WBC) Tomasina men’s casual bowls was able to go ahead as scheduled. Gees Dennis and Mark Russell-Boulton took advantage of the opportunity and mustered up a plus 16 to take the top podium spot. Finishing the morning’s play in second spot were Robin de Gouveia and Mike Hough, leaving Len Pugh and Henry Welgemoed with the sportsmen’s prize. A substantial sponsored pork roast was raffled and the lucky number was chosen by Kurt Spack. The four 60/ 40 board prizes went the way of Phil Hill, Maurice Faulkner, Greg Ferns and Tomcat Cavanagh. On an un-seasonal, hot Saturday afternoon, 15 May, a determined Dawn Spack skipped her trips team, comprising Jo-Jo Jordaan and Kitty Schaefer, to a win over Cheryl Waterman, Ruth Petzer and Anne Bonthrone to claim the crown as women’s trips champions for 2021.

The protocol requiring club colours to be worn for a final which was set aside and all six women wore pink in solidarity with the justice for Yolandi Botes campaign.

Sunday’s fun day organised in line with the bowls South Africa declaration of May as bowls awareness month (discover your local bowls club) was a success and after 18 ends of 4-3-2-1 bowls, the participants enjoyed a delicious savoury pancake lunch from the green café. Men’s and women’s inter-club league games will be played on Saturday, 22 May, with the men’s team travelling away and the women having their first league game at home. On Sunday, 23 May at 9am the semi-finals of the men’s nominated pairs championship will be contested between Troy Garland and Matt Lassak who will take on Wayne Smith and Vic McCreanor and Simon Garland and Spider Williams who will face off against Robin de Gouveia and Dave Carroll.
