Suspect arrested after high-speed chase in Joburg CBD

Officers recovered live ammunition and false registration plates after a suspect allegedly linked to a planned business robbery was arrested in the Johannesburg CBD.

The JMPD Tactical Response Unit (TRU), in collaboration with the SAPS Gauteng Highway Patrol, Johannesburg Central SAPS and Rentrak, arrested a 21-year-old man following a high-speed chase in the Johannesburg CBD on May 13.

According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, the operation was launched after TRU members received intelligence about a group of suspects allegedly planning a business robbery in the CBD during peak-hour traffic.

In a co-ordinated operation, officers were strategically deployed throughout the area.

“While monitoring the area, officers spotted a white Suzuki Dzire matching the description provided. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle using sirens and blue lights, the driver accelerated, leading to a high-speed chase,” said Fihla.

The pursuit came to an end at the corner of Mooi and Anderson streets when the suspect allegedly lost control of the vehicle and collided with a silver Toyota Starlet.

Upon searching the vehicle, officers allegedly found three rounds of live ammunition. The vehicle was also fitted with false registration plates, while additional number plates were discovered inside the car.

“The suspect was questioned at the scene. He claimed that he had travelled from KZN to pick up accomplices in Hillbrow before proceeding to Mafikeng to commit a business robbery,” said Fihla.

Commissioner Patrick Jaca, JMPD’s Chief of Police, commended the officers involved for their swift response, saying their vigilance helped prevent a violent crime in the city centre.

The suspect was detained at Johannesburg Central SAPS and faces charges including possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle, possession of live ammunition, conspiracy to commit business robbery, and reckless and negligent driving.

The Suzuki Dzire was impounded at the SAPS Aeroton vehicle pound.
