Suspect arrested for illegal firearm possession and public shooting in Freedom Park

The suspect was swiftly apprehended after allegedly firing shots into the air, with officers recovering a Glock pistol with a filed-off serial number and live ammunition.

JMPD reaffirmed its commitment to removing illegal firearms from the streets following the arrest of a man in Freedom Park on May 13.

Officers from the Tactical Response Unit (TRU) arrested a man for allegedly possessing an unlicensed firearm and discharging a weapon in public.

According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, officers acted on information received from a reliable source regarding an individual allegedly carrying an illegal firearm in Freedom Park.

Upon arrival at the location, officers observed a group of men gathered on the pavement.

“During surveillance, they saw a man fitting the description draw a firearm and begin firing shots into the air, posing an immediate threat to the community,” said Fihla.

The TRU members then approached the scene tactically, activating their blue lights and identifying themselves as police officers.

“The suspect was swiftly apprehended, and a subsequent search led to the recovery of a black Glock pistol with the serial number filed off, six live 9mm rounds of ammunition, and one spent cartridge,” Fihla added.

When questioned, the suspect was unable to produce a valid firearm licence.

“The recovery of this firearm, especially one with a defaced serial number, marks a significant win for public safety. We commend the TRU for their vigilance and tactical precision in removing a reckless offender from our neighbourhoods,” said Fihla.

The suspect remains in custody and is expected to appear in court soon.

The JMPD has urged residents to continue reporting suspicious activity and illegal firearms to help improve safety across Johannesburg.
