New coding and robotics centre launched at Soweto primary school
iSchoolAfrica and iStore have launched a refurbished coding and robotics centre at Igugu Primary School to expand digital learning opportunities for learners in Soweto.
iSchoolAfrica, in collaboration with iStore, launched a new refurbished coding and robotics centre at Igugu Primary School (IPS) in Mofolo, Soweto, on May 12.
iSchoolAfrica aims to reduce inequalities and enhance opportunities for educational and economic growth through the use of technology. Its mission is to equip young people with the tools needed to thrive in a digital world.

“Today our mission is brought to life once again through the generosity, vision and commitment of iStore.
“iSchoolAfrica is about long-term partnerships and sustainability. Today is a big day as we officially launch a centre.

“It is not about opening a room or handing over devices – it’s about celebrating possibilities and partnerships,” said Michelle Lissoos, director of iSchoolAfrica.
Lissoos shared that iSchoolAfrica began working with IPS in 2020, starting with a digital library initiative.
She added that the school community has continued to show passion and enthusiasm for ensuring learners have access to quality education by attending iSchoolAfrica Saturday Champion workshops and actively participating in programmes.
Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training Dr Nomusa Dube-Ncube said the launch marked an important step towards making digital literacy, coding and robotics more accessible.
“For too long, digital literacy, coding and robotic skills have exclusively been for the privileged. What is happening today is also affirming that it is about our local communities,” she said.
“We are very grateful for what is being unveiled and launched here at Igugu. It says that every child deserves to be in a space with devices and gadgets that will empower them and make them leaders of the future.”
Phindile Radebe, regional manager of iStore, said she hopes learners using the new technology will one day bring their own children to local schools because quality digital education is now becoming available within their communities.

“We should not have to look outside our local communities for the best because it is already here in Soweto,” she said.
The fully furnished coding and robotics centre was handed over to IPS with iPads and other technological devices aimed at developing coding and robotics skills among learners.
“I am speechless that this has been done for our school. This is the first coding and robotics centre in Soweto by iSchoolAfrica and iStore,” said IPS principal Sonto Tshabalala.
“This is not only for the school but for the community at large. We have found that our learners perform well when using digital learning material and have improved academically in general.
“Therefore, this is also an investment in education. A big thank you to iSchoolAfrica and iStore for this momentous day.”
The day concluded with a practical demonstration by learners showcasing the skills and knowledge they had acquired during their sessions.
